The expert, professional staff of the Pennsylvania Flora Project is available as consultants to provide biological surveys, research, and other specialized services. We have conducted such work for municipalities, state agencies, and conservation organizations.
In 2007, the staff of the Botany Department completed the Montgomery County Natural Areas Inventory Update. The main purpose of this project was to identify sites that still harbor intact communities of native plants and animals. Work on the Natural Areas Inventory Update focused on 13 conservation landscapes throughout the county. The resulting 400-page report covered a total of almost 75,000 acres or 24% of the area of Montgomery County, and identified landscapes of several thousand acres each in which important ecological functions can be preserved or restored, and outlined management strategies needed to promote the continuation of those essential ecological functions.
The Botany Department has completed a Natural Areas Inventory Update for Bucks County. This project follows an original Natural Areas Inventory of the county completed by Drs. Rhoads and Block in 1999. The emphasis of the project focuses on the conservation of larger natural areas required to assure that critical ecological functions such as groundwater recharge, nutrient cycling, wildlife habitat, and oxygen production continue without disruption.
The Botany Department has also completed biological inventories for a number of Pennsylvania's State Parks, and created a new approach to state park resource management referred to as "Critical Resource Areas". Research efforts identified park areas where development should be limited and special efforts made to preserve intact ecological systems.
The Morris Arboretum is a unique institution with an unprecedented combination of botanical experience, technical expertise and access to field data. Today, the Botany department continues to carry out the mission first laid out by John and Lydia Morris of providing excellence in research, education, public service and stewardship.
